Training to be a Chartered Surveyor: first 100 days at Forge Property Consultants

Rhiannon Parry-Hughes is working with us while studying for a Chartered Surveyor (Rural) Degree Apprenticeship in Rural Enterprise and Land Management at Harper Adams University. She is working in our North Wales office, which is located on King Street in Wrexham city centre, alongside our director Nick Edwards and our head office near Oswestry, with managing director Charles Lawson.

Rhiannon’s degree apprenticeship course means she attends her university for week-long blocks of tuition spread across the academic year while still working for Forge during the rest of the time and working towards her RICS and CAAV qualifications.

Now that Rhiannon has been working for us for just over three months, we asked her for her reflections on her first 100 days working at Forge Property Consultants.

Rhiannon says,

“Since starting my apprenticeship placement at Forge in September, I have been involved in a range of job types, from administering tenancy agreements to the sale of land, but the area I feel I have developed the most in is valuation.

“Building on prior valuation theory I have learned at Harper Adams University, I feel very lucky to gain practical experience from a team with such a wide breadth of expertise. Forge undertakes valuations of diverse property types, using a broad range of valuation methods and techniques. For example, one week I may be assisting with the valuation of a block of agricultural land, while the next I may be considering the financial viability of a barn conversion development, using the residual method.

“In the relatively short space of time since starting with the firm, I have already had to consider complex matters affecting the valuation of property, which will set me in good stead for my APC examination in the future.’’
