What is the Adding Value Grant?

07/06/22What is the Adding Value Grant?

The Adding Value (AV) Grant is funding that is available from the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) to pay for buildings, machinery or equipment to add value to particular agricultural products after they are harvested or reared. The minimum grant is £25,000 and the maximum grant is £300,000 per applicant business.

Eligible products include arable and horticultural crops, non-food crops and livestock products.

The RPA is prioritising projects that can be shown to improve business resilience and environmental sustainability, introduce or build on new processing capabilities, process products for the first time and encourage collaboration. The more of these priorities you meet, the stronger your application will be.

Who can apply for an AV Grant?

To apply for a grant you need to be a grower or producer of agricultural or horticultural products or to be a business that processes products which is at least 50% owned by agricultural or horticultural producers. Various other conditions apply too, such as any grant funded assets have to be located in England. Certain organisations, such as PLCs or local authorities are not eligible for AV grants.

The funding can pay for capital items to enable value to be added to eligible agricultural products, after they’ve been harvested or reared. This can include things such as equipment for preparing or processing products, retailing equipment or premises.

Applying for an AV Grant

The grant opens for applications this month and closes 6 weeks later.

Read the How to apply guidance before you apply for funding. You’ll need to follow a 2-stage application process:

Stage 1: To check if you’re eligible and how well your project fits the funding priorities using an online checker - your ‘online application’.

Stage 2: If you’re eligible and your project scores well enough against the funding priorities, you’ll get an application form and project number to make a ‘full application’.

The grant is competitive, so RPA will score your application against the funding priorities. RPA will award a grant to the strongest applications. If your full application is eligible, and scores highly enough, RPA will offer you a grant. Find out more about it here.
