Routes to RICS: Working in property surveying and land management

20/05/19Routes to RICS: Working in property surveying and land management

Anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in property surveying and land management will come into contact with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). It’s a world-renowned, global, professional body that maintains the highest international standards in the valuation, management and development of all types of land, real estate, construction and infrastructure.

The RICS was founded in 1868 and is headquartered in Parliament Square in London. It has over 130,000 fully-qualified and trainee professionals. Its brand is the guarantee of quality and integrity when it comes to the surveying sector.

Membership of the RICS

By becoming a member of the RICS, surveyors and valuers are ensuring that their level of knowledge and skills will remain at the forefront of industry developments. There are three levels of RICS membership – Associates, Members or Fellows, and the latter two are also known as chartered surveyors. Within the broader institute, there are many specialist areas, grouped as Property Professionals, Land and Built Environment.

How to join the RICS

Entry to membership can be done by four principal routes, as an academic, graduate, technical role or senior professional. There are a multitude of different pathways to becoming a chartered surveyor or valuer, and it’s worth exploring which one will best suit your potential and strengths.

All our consultant team has been associated with RICS. Andy Lowe, our Assistant Surveyor at Forge Property Consultants, is a good example of how the institute can help to define a route into the industry. Andy joined our team in 2018 after graduating from Harper Adams University, where he studied Rural Property Management. He completed a successful placement year with Forge and is currently working towards his APC exams to become a Chartered Surveyor and RICS Registered Valuer. Andy’s range of expertise means that he is involved in all aspects of the business, focusing on valuation and residential sales and lettings. Like all of Forge’s team, Andy’s RICS membership is both an endorsement of his commitment to the highest industry standards and a guarantee of his professionalism in the property consultancy field.
